EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing. It is a psychotherapy approach that was developed in the late 1980s to help individuals process distressing or traumatic memories and the associated emotions, thoughts, and physical sensations.
The goal of EMDR is to help the individuals:

reduces emotional distress and negative beliefs
This is done through a series of structured phases where the therapist helps the client locate the distressing memory, identify negative beliefs, develop positive beliefs, and integrate them into a more adaptive understanding of the past events.
